Turku's most important attractions can be seen in one day when you choose one museum, walk along the Aura River and explore the historic center. A suitable combination for a first visit is Turku Castle, the riverfront, Old Great Square and either Aboa Vetus Ars Nova or Luostarinmäki. You should reserve a separate half-day for Ruissalo.

The most important attractions in Turku
On your first visit, it is worth focusing on the area around the Aura River. Turku Castle and Forum Marinum are located at the mouth of the river, while Old Great Square, Aboa Vetus Ars Nova, Luostarinmäki and the cathedral surroundings are closer to the center. Ruissalo complements a city tour with nature and seascapes.
1. Turku Castle and Forum Marinum
Construction of Turku Castle began in the 1280s. Over the centuries, a small fortress grew into the present complex consisting of the main castle and outer bailey. You should reserve at least a couple of hours for the castle tour. Located very close by, Forum Marinum presents the history of Finnish shipping and naval forces. During the summer season, the complex also includes museum ships.
It is possible to visit both museums on the same day, but an in-depth visit to both can easily make the day tiring. On a first visit, it is worth choosing one of them as the main attraction of the day.
2. The Aura River and Föri
The Aura River connects the attractions in the city center. You can walk along the banks from Turku Castle to the center, stop at restaurants and cafés, and cross to the other side of the river via several bridges.

3. Old Great Square and the cathedral surroundings
Old Great Square is a natural starting point for exploring historic Turku. The different stages of the city's history, from the Middle Ages to later architecture, can be seen around the square. The Aura River, Aboa Vetus Ars Nova and Vartiovuori are nearby.

4. Aboa Vetus Ars Nova
Aboa Vetus Ars Nova combines archaeology and contemporary art. In the ruins of Aboa Vetus, you can walk among the remains of medieval houses and along an old street line. Ars Nova, in turn, presents contemporary art and the museum's own art collection.

5. Luostarinmäki and Vartiovuori
The buildings of Luostarinmäki still stand in their original locations. In many places, the area looks much as it did about 200 years ago, and the great fire of 1827 spared it from the worst destruction.

Vartiovuori is a short distance from Luostarinmäki. The park is suitable for a peaceful break and provides a contrast to museums and the busier sections of the riverfront.
6. Ruissalo
Ruissalo is the right choice when you want to exchange the streets of the city center for forests, coastal scenery and historic villas. You should reserve at least half a day for the island.

What to do in Turku in one day?
For one day, it is worth choosing one major attraction, a riverfront walk and the historic center. Turku Castle and the cathedral surroundings are about four kilometers apart, so exploring museums, having a meal and walking will fill the day without additional activities.
Morning: Turku Castle
Start at Turku Castle. In the morning, there is plenty of time for the tour, and you do not have to hurry to the next destination. If maritime history interests you more, choose Forum Marinum instead of the castle.
Midday: Forum Marinum and the Aura River
Continue from the castle via Forum Marinum to the Aura River waterfront. You can have lunch by the river and walk toward the center at your own pace. If you want to cross to the other side of the river, take Föri.
You do not have to walk the entire 4.1-kilometer route. You can also travel between the castle and the center by bus.
Afternoon: Aboa Vetus or Luostarinmäki
Choose one museum for the afternoon. Aboa Vetus is suitable if you want to stay near the riverfront and Old Great Square. Luostarinmäki is a good choice if you are more interested in an open-air museum and an old wooden town.
It is possible to fit two museums into the same afternoon, but it is rarely necessary.
Evening: Old Great Square and the riverfront
End the day at Old Great Square and the Aura River waterfront. This way, the evening will not be spent making another transfer, and you can choose a restaurant or café based on where you happen to be.
Ruissalo should not be added to the same day unless it is the most important destination of your visit.
What to do in Turku in two or three days?
In two days, you can see the most important attractions and explore one area outside the city center. The third day is worth spending in Ruissalo or on a more leisurely museum tour.
First day: Turku Castle or Forum Marinum, the Aura River, Old Great Square and one museum in the city center.
Second day: Port Arthur, Kakolanmäki or a more relaxed tour of Luostarinmäki and Vartiovuori.
Third day: Ruissalo, a temporary exhibition or a museum that you did not visit on the first day.
During a longer visit, you do not need to plan everything in advance. Leave one half-day free for the weather, events and interesting places that you only discover in the city.
Which neighborhoods in Turku are worth walking around?
In addition to the attractions, it is worth getting to know Turku through its neighborhoods. Port Arthur and Kakolanmäki are close to the city center, but their buildings, scale and atmosphere differ clearly from the riverfront.
Port Arthur, or Portsa
Port Arthur is known for its wooden houses and small streets. The area is suitable for a peaceful walk, and the tour does not require a separate itinerary. Portsa can be combined with Kakolanmäki, the city center or the west bank of the Aura River.
Kakolanmäki
The former Kakolanmäki prison area, its stone buildings and the views make it an interesting destination even without a museum visit. From the area, you can continue down to the riverfront or toward Port Arthur.

The season affects Turku mainly in terms of how much of the day you should spend outdoors. Museums operate year-round, but Ruissalo, the riverfront and museum ships are especially prominent in summer.

In winter, a good combination consists of Turku Castle, Aboa Vetus Ars Nova and Forum Marinum. Old Great Square and the riverfront are suitable for a shorter walk between museums.
Opening hours may be more limited than in summer. Check them directly on the destinations' websites, especially around Christmas, New Year and exhibition changes.
How should you get around Turku?
In the city center, along the Aura River and around the historic attractions, walking is usually the easiest option. Comfortable shoes are still necessary, as you can easily cover several kilometers during the day.
