Hotel in central Turku or a furnished apartment? Choose for your stay

By the Mera editorial team

A hotel in central Turku can be a good choice when its location and services fit your plans. A furnished apartment may work better if you want a kitchen, laundry facilities or room to spend time together. The length of your visit helps frame the decision, but the actual rooms, services and booking terms matter more than the label.

Start with three questions: how many nights are you staying, what will you do at your accommodation, and where will you travel each day? These give you a useful basis for comparing hotels and apartments beyond the nightly rate.

How does the length of your stay affect the choice?

A one-night city break and a month-long work assignment call for different things. Neither automatically requires a particular type of accommodation: hotels and furnished apartments can both suit short and longer visits. Use the following situations to decide what matters to you.

1–3 nights: arrival and your plans for the day

On a short trip, straightforward arrival may matter more than extra floor space. If you arrive late or leave early, check reception hours or how you will receive the keys and access instructions. A hotel name alone does not guarantee a reception or late check-in.

A hotel may suit you if you want breakfast provided and can find a property offering the services you need. An apartment can work just as well for a few nights if you prefer to make breakfast yourself or need a separate bedroom. Check the actual sleeping arrangements in either case.

4–27 nights: look at how the space will work

Over several days, where you eat, store your belongings and spend the evening becomes more noticeable. If you work remotely, look at the desk or table, chair and space for calls. A dining table is not necessarily a dedicated workstation, and an apartment is not necessarily a home with a separate bedroom.

A hotel room may still be all you need if you spend most of the day elsewhere and use the hotel's services. A kitchen, laundry facilities and separate rooms can make daily life easier on a work assignment or family trip. Compare the specific facilities rather than assuming they come with every apartment.

28 nights or more: consider everyday life and the whole offer

For a stay of several weeks or months, think about an ordinary Tuesday as well as your arrival. Check cooking facilities, laundry, storage and the daily journey to work or campus. Agree the price, cleaning, invoicing and any extension terms before you book.

At Mera, stays of 28 nights or more follow the longer-stay offer process. This is Mera's booking arrangement, not a universal point at which an apartment becomes better than a hotel. Any extension needs separate confirmation of availability, price and terms.

Compare hotels and furnished apartments on the same basis

Use the same dates, guest numbers and required services for each quote. Breakfast, parking, laundry and cleaning may be included, charged separately or unavailable in either type of accommodation.

What to compare What to check before booking
Beds and layout Are the sleeping places in separate rooms or one shared space? Is there a suitable bed for everyone?
Cooking and dining Is there a kitchenette or a kitchen suitable for cooking, the equipment you need and enough dining places?
Working What table or desk, chair and internet connection are provided? Can you take calls without disturbing others?
Laundry and storage Is there a washing machine in the apartment, a shared laundry room or a separate laundry service?
Arrival and assistance How will you get in, and whom can you contact if you need help?
Services What do breakfast, cleaning and changes of bed linen include, and what do they cost?
Total price and terms What is the cost of the whole stay? Check cancellations, date changes, any deposit and extension arrangements.

Include transport and the services you will actually use. Having a kitchen may reduce restaurant spending if you cook, but it does not make an apartment automatically cheaper. Keep a refundable deposit separate from the accommodation cost, while allowing for it in your available budget.

Mera's agreed longer-stay package includes furnishings, electricity, water, internet and final cleaning as set out in the offer. Cleaning during your stay and linen changes are paid extras arranged separately. Check the current longer-stay information and your own offer for the details.

Is central Turku the right location for your visit?

The city centre can be a useful base for the riverfront, restaurants and cultural attractions. On a work or event trip, your regular journey may matter more. Distance from the Market Square alone will not tell you how well a location fits your days.

Check the journey from the exact address to your destination for the weekday and time you need in the Föli journey planner. Look at walking sections, changes and the return journey. If you drive, confirm parking availability and charges separately.

You can also consider neighbourhoods near the centre. Mera's guide to where to stay in Turku introduces areas including Kakola, the streets by Port Arthur, Lonttinen and Pohjola. Kakola's slopes are a practical consideration with a pushchair or if you prefer to avoid climbs.

A studio or separate bedrooms?

Two different Mera homes illustrate why the layout matters. Sofiankatu is a studio, with sleeping and living in the same room. It may suit one or two guests who do not need a separate bedroom.

Kakolan Torni has two bedrooms, shared living space, a private sauna and a balcony. Separate rooms can make different daily routines easier for people travelling together. Still check the bed arrangements and your group's needs on the individual property page.

Apply the same approach to hotels: compare the room or apartment type rather than guest capacity alone. Also check whether the photographs show the exact apartment you will book or a representative room type.

Find accommodation that fits your stay

Choose three things you do not want to compromise on. They might be a reception, separate bedrooms or a kitchen suitable for cooking. Then narrow down the location and compare the total price. This leaves room for either a hotel or a furnished home to be the right choice.

Frequently asked questions

Is a hotel in central Turku always best for a short trip?

No. A hotel may suit you when you use its services and the location fits your plans. An apartment can also work for a few nights if you need a kitchen or separate sleeping spaces. Check availability and any minimum stay.

Is a furnished apartment cheaper than a hotel?

Not automatically. Compare total prices for the same dates, guests and services. Include the meals, cleaning, parking and laundry arrangements you will need.

What is included in a Mera stay of 28 nights or more?

The agreed package includes furnishings, electricity, water, internet and final cleaning as set out in your offer. Cleaning during the stay and linen changes are paid extras arranged separately. Check the individual home and the contents of your offer.

How should I choose a location in Turku?

Compare the exact address with the places you plan to visit. Check walking sections, public transport changes and your return journey at the right time. Consider any slopes and parking requirements too.
