Temporary accommodation during a plumbing renovation: family life, work and belongings

A plumbing renovation can put your home out of use, but daily life carries on. School mornings, early work calls and the laundry still need a place. The best temporary accommodation is therefore the home that supports your ordinary week — not simply the one with enough advertised bed spaces or an appealing photograph.
This guide focuses on family routines, working from home and belongings during a renovation in Finland. For booking dates and cost comparisons, use our companion seven-point checklist for accommodation during a plumbing renovation.
Plan one ordinary weekday first
Write down a day from morning to bedtime: who leaves first, where the children have an afternoon snack and when someone needs to sleep. This makes it easier to decide whether you need a separate bedroom or can comfortably share an open space.
Check actual journeys from the address to school, nursery and work. If you drive, confirm where you can park, whether a space is available and what it costs. A central location is not necessarily the most convenient choice, and a peaceful-looking photograph cannot tell you about surrounding noise.
Choose three essentials before searching. These might be separate sleeping spaces, a manageable school run and laundry facilities. Once those are clear, you can be more flexible about other preferences.
Look beyond the advertised guest capacity
An apartment's maximum occupancy does not explain how its layout will work for several weeks. Ask which beds are permanent, where any sofa bed is located and how much room remains when it is open.
A studio and an apartment with a separate bedroom meet different needs. If a child goes to bed before everyone else, or someone works in the evenings, having the bed, sofa and dining table in one room may be difficult. Ask for a floor plan or additional photographs where needed.
Confirm travel cots, cot linen, stairs and lift access separately. Photographs do not establish child safety or accessibility. The images in this guide show Mera's Sofiankatu studio in Turku. They illustrate a furnished home, not accommodation suitable for every family size.
Make room for work, meals and laundry
If you work remotely, decide whether you only need somewhere to use a laptop or a room you can close for calls. A dining table is not automatically a suitable full-time workspace. Check the chair, lighting, power sockets and internet connection as well as the desk or table. If connection speed is critical for your work, ask for current information.
Consider meals at the same time. Can everyone sit at the table, what equipment do you need for cooking, and where will everyday groceries go? Laundry also needs more than a washing machine: check how clothes can be dried. Find out whether facilities are inside the apartment or shared, and whether charges or booking slots apply.

Sort belongings into three groups before moving
Storage in temporary accommodation is best kept for everyday living rather than the contents of an entire home. A practical starting point is:
- Daily essentials: clothes, medication, work equipment, school supplies and the things children need for their bedtime routine.
- Items needed during the stay: spare linen, sports equipment and outdoor clothing for the season.
- Items to store elsewhere: furniture and belongings you will not need during the renovation.
Ask the host what storage is actually available and whether large boxes or your own furniture may be brought into the apartment. If you need separate storage, check its cost and how you will access your belongings.
For anything left in the home being renovated, follow the housing company's or renovation team's instructions on what may remain and how it must be protected. Do not assume you can enter during the work to collect something you have forgotten. Isännöintiliitto provides background guidance on housing-company plumbing renovations, in Finnish.
Agree what happens if the dates change
Ask for the latest estimate of when you will need to live elsewhere, and tell the accommodation provider if the end date is uncertain. Do not book extra time without understanding its cost and the terms for changing it.
Before committing, get the total price, included services and cancellation, amendment and extension terms in writing. An extension cannot be assumed: ask when you would need to arrange it and what the options are if the same home is no longer available. The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority also advises checking accommodation booking terms.
Looking for a temporary home in Turku or Pori?
Start by exploring Mera's homes and comparing the layouts with your own needs. For 28 nights or more, request a longer-stay offer. Include your dates, the number of adults and children, sleeping arrangements, work requirements and any uncertainty about when the renovation will finish.
The price and inclusions for a longer Mera stay are agreed in the offer. Parking, laundry facilities and any additional services are checked for the individual home. If you are unsure whether a home will work for you, ask before booking.

Frequently asked questions
Can a studio work as temporary accommodation for a family?
It depends on the number of guests, the children's ages and your routines. Check permitted occupancy and the actual beds. An open-plan studio may not work if you need different bedtimes or a separate space for work.
Can we stay in a hotel during a plumbing renovation?
Yes, if the room, services and terms meet your needs. Compare the hotel and furnished apartment for the same dates and guest numbers. Check cooking facilities, laundry, sleeping arrangements and the total cost separately for each option.
Can we bring our own furniture to temporary accommodation?
Do not assume so. Agree this with the host before booking and check the space available. A furnished apartment will not usually solve storage for the entire contents of the home being renovated.
How should we prepare for a renovation delay?
Before booking, check how extensions are arranged, their cost and the notice required, alongside amendment and cancellation terms. Obtain written confirmation of any extension; the original booking does not guarantee that the same apartment will remain available.
