Short-term rental apartment: when is a furnished home a better option than a hotel?

Short-term rental apartment: when is a furnished home a better option than a hotel?

A short-term rental apartment is often more practical than a hotel when you are staying for several nights and need your own space for cooking, working or spending time together. A hotel may be the better option for a one-night stopover or when reception, breakfast and daily hotel services are the deciding factors.

The best option does not therefore depend on price alone. First consider how you plan to use the accommodation: will you only return in the evening to sleep, or will you live there as part of your normal daily routine?

Comparison point Short-term rental apartment Hotel
Space Usually separate everyday spaces, such as a kitchen and living area Often one room and a bathroom
Cooking Your own kitchen or kitchenette, depending on the facilities at the property Usually a restaurant, breakfast or room service
Working Possibility to separate work and rest, if the layout allows it The desk may be in the same room as the bed
Service More independent accommodation; services vary by property Reception and other hotel services are often readily available
Total price Compare the rent, cleaning, additional fees and terms Compare the room rate, breakfast, parking and other additional fees

When is a short-term rental apartment better than a hotel?

A furnished home is particularly suitable when accommodation means more than just spending the night. A kitchen, living area and home-like facilities make everyday life easier when your days follow a similar routine or your group also spends time indoors.

When you are staying for several nights

The longer the visit, the more the small everyday details matter. Being able to prepare breakfast, store food and unpack your belongings without constantly repacking them can make your stay more peaceful.

When you need space for work or spending time together

When travelling for work, a separate desk and quiet room may be more important than hotel services. With family or friends, a shared living room provides space to spend time together without everything happening around the beds.

For example, Kakolan Torni is an entire home with two bedrooms, a kitchen, a living area and a private sauna. Always check the layout and facilities of the specific property on its own page.

When you want a normal daily routine

In a short-term rental apartment, you can often eat, work and rest in separate spaces. However, laundry facilities, storage space and kitchen equipment are not automatically the same in every property. Check them before booking instead of assuming that the word “furnished” refers to a specific level of service.

When is a hotel the better choice?

A hotel is often the most convenient option for a short visit when you arrive late, leave early or simply need a place to sleep. It may also be a better fit when you want breakfast, daily cleaning, reception or other services under one roof.

For a one-night stay, there may not be enough time to benefit from a kitchen or larger living area. In that case, location, flexible check-in and services may matter more than square metres.

Is a short-term rental apartment cheaper than a hotel?

Not always. Compare the total price of the entire stay, not just the price of the first night. Check at least:

  • the total accommodation price for the entire period
  • cleaning and service fees
  • the cost of parking
  • fees for possible extra beds or pets
  • cancellation and amendment terms
  • what is actually included in the facilities and service.

A kitchen may reduce restaurant costs, but the savings depend on whether you use it. One home may be practical for a larger group, but when comparing two separate hotel rooms with one apartment, you should also consider privacy, beds and the number of bathrooms.

Consumers must be given essential information about the accommodation service and its terms before entering into an agreement. The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority's guidance on accommodation services helps you understand what to check in the booking terms.

Who is a furnished home suitable for?

For a business trip or project period

A furnished home can make a longer work assignment easier if you need a functional workspace, a kitchen and the opportunity to recover in peace and quiet. Companies should also check the practices concerning invoicing, guest information and possible extensions. Mera's options for longer work assignments can be found under corporate accommodation.

For a family or group of friends

Separate bedrooms and a shared living area can make the accommodation more straightforward. However, check the number of sleeping places, children's equipment, accessibility, lift, stairs and parking on the home's own page.

During a move, renovation or other temporary situation

When your own home is unavailable, continuity in everyday life is often more important than hotel services. Make sure there is enough storage space and ask about the possibility of extending your stay before booking if your schedule may change.

How to choose suitable accommodation

Make your decision using these five questions:

  1. How long is the stay? The needs for one night differ from those for a week or a month.
  2. What will you do in the apartment? Do you need a kitchen, workspace or shared living area?
  3. Who will be staying? Check the actual sleeping places, room layout and privacy.
  4. What does the total price include? Compare all fees and booking terms for the same period.
  5. How will you arrive and get around? Check the address, parking, public transport and access.
