Family Accommodation in Turku: A Checklist for Families with Children

Family Accommodation in Turku: A Checklist for Families with Children

Family accommodation in Turku should be assessed based on how you sleep, eat and spend time together in the home. First, make sure that the property accepts families with children and that its capacity, beds and layout suit your party.

Beautiful photos do not tell you whether you can continue the evening in another room after a child has fallen asleep or whether the whole family fits around the dining table. This seven-point checklist helps you compare homes for both short visits and stays of several weeks.

1. Check every sleeping place

Count all guests and state the children’s ages in your enquiry. Make sure the booking is made for the correct number of people and that sleeping arrangements for a possible baby or toddler have been agreed upon.

Ask specific questions about the beds:

  • Which beds are available, and how wide are they?
  • Is there a suitable sleeping place for everyone?
  • Is a sofa bed needed, and where is it located?
  • Is a travel cot available if you need one?
  • Can the sleeping area be separated from the living room by a door?

A two-bedroom home can make it easier to accommodate different sleep schedules. A studio, on the other hand, may work for a small party if the property’s rules allow children and everyone is comfortable sharing the same space. A solution suitable for a short trip may not feel as good for several weeks.

2. Consider the layout through the lens of evening routines

Imagine an evening when one child is already asleep and the others are still awake. Where can you read, talk or prepare an evening snack? And where can an adult work if the family spends the day at home?

In addition to the room layout, check the blackout options, lighting and possible sources of noise. A photo or mention of a quiet area does not by itself tell you about the sleeping conditions. If necessary, ask how dark the bedroom can be made and what kind of sounds can be heard from the surroundings.

For example, Kakola Tower has two bedrooms. The room layout provides a starting point for comparison, but it is still a good idea to check the beds, permitted number of guests and other family needs on the property page before booking.

3. Make sure the kitchen, dining area and laundry facilities are suitable

In family accommodation, the kitchen is often more than just a place for a coffee maker. Consider whether you can prepare the meals you normally eat.

Find out whether there are saucepans, a frying pan, dishes and cutlery for the entire party. Also check the cold-storage facilities and whether the family can eat at the same time. If you need a high chair, ask for confirmation of its availability.

For a longer stay, laundry and drying facilities affect everyday life. Is the washing machine in the apartment, in the building’s shared laundry room or somewhere else? Where can clothes be dried, and how are linen changes and cleaning handled? Do not assume that all furnished homes offer the same equipment or services.

4. Find out about access and storage space

Strollers, suitcases, outdoor clothing and children’s belongings all need space. Photos do not always show how much empty storage space remains for residents.

Make sure before arrival:

  • whether there are stairs at the entrance or on the way to the apartment
  • whether a lift is available and whether a stroller fits in it
  • where children’s prams and strollers may be stored
  • how the keys are handed over and when you can access the apartment
  • whom to contact if there is a problem with arrival.

Also find out about facilities important to your family, such as a balcony and sauna, and the instructions for using them. A property accepting families with children does not mean that the apartment comes equipped with everything a small child may need.

5. Choose the location based on your own routes

For a weekend trip, being close to the riverfront, restaurants or places to visit may be important. During a stay of several weeks, a grocery store, workplace, school or another daily destination may matter more.

Check the routes using the means of transport you would use. A short distance on the map may include a hill, stairs or a difficult transfer. If you travel by car, verify the location, availability and price of parking separately.

Explore Mera’s homes in Turku and compare their locations with your family’s plans. The city centre is not automatically the best choice if most daily journeys lead elsewhere.

6. Match the size of the home to the length of your stay

On a trip lasting a few nights, limited storage space or a shared sleeping area may be an acceptable compromise. Over several weeks, the same things are felt every day.

Item to check Short visit Stay of several weeks
Sleeping Suitable beds for everyone and a workable evening routine Also different sleep schedules and privacy
Kitchen The meals you need and places to eat Equipment suitable for daily cooking
Laundry Laundry needs during the visit Regular washing, drying and linen changes
Storage Suitcases and belongings for a short trip Clothes, strollers and everyday items
Location The trip itinerary and arrival Repeated work, school and errand routes

If your family is looking for a home during a renovation, move or work assignment, Mera’s longer stays are a natural place to start. Also mention any need for flexibility: an extension depends on availability and the agreed terms.

7. Ask for the price and important information for the whole family

Request the total price for the correct number of residents and the entire period. Find out whether, for example, bed linen, towels, final cleaning, electricity, water, internet and parking are included in the price. Confirm the availability and price of possible extra beds and children’s equipment.

Read the cancellation and change terms before paying. Do not assume that an uncertain departure date can be changed later without affecting the price.

You can send the accommodation provider an enquiry such as this:

We are looking for accommodation in Turku for [dates]. There are [adults and children] of us, and the children’s ages are [ages]. We need [beds or bedrooms] as well as [for example, a travel cot, laundry facilities or parking]. Could you confirm whether the home is suitable for us, what the price includes and what change and cancellation terms apply to the booking?

Once your key needs are clear, compare Mera’s homes based on their spaces and equipment. For accommodation of at least 28 nights, you can send Mera your accommodation request. State the period, family size, children’s ages and the most important everyday needs. The suitability, availability and price of the home will be confirmed separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can a studio be suitable for a family with children?

It can be suitable if the property accepts families with children, its permitted number of guests and beds are sufficient, and the shared space fits the family’s routine. Check these points before booking. During a longer stay, the need for a separate sleeping area may become more important.

What information should a family provide to the accommodation provider?

State the dates, number of adults and children, the children’s ages, and the details of the beds, children’s equipment and other facilities you need. Also mention parking, a stroller, remote work or an uncertain departure date if they affect your choice.

Are a travel cot or high chair always included in family accommodation?

Not necessarily. Equipment and its availability vary by property. Ask for confirmation in advance of the equipment you need and check whether there is an additional charge.

What should be checked for a family stay of several weeks?

In addition to sleeping arrangements and location, check daily cooking, laundry and drying, storage, cleaning, the price for the entire period, and the terms for changes and extensions. An extension is not automatic; it is confirmed according to availability.
