What is an apartment hotel and who is it suitable for?

Author: Mera editorial team · Reviewed 22.9.2026

An apartment hotel is furnished accommodation that, in addition to a standard hotel room, usually offers the opportunity to prepare food and live more like at home. However, the name alone does not indicate the size of the apartment, the services or the equipment provided. That is why the choice should be based on the layout, practical amenities, terms and the total price of the entire stay.

An apartment hotel is best suited to situations where the accommodation involves more than just sleeping: working, cooking, doing laundry or sharing everyday life with another person. On a short trip, the services of a traditional hotel may, in turn, be more important.

What does an apartment hotel mean?

In practice, an apartment hotel means a furnished apartment booked for temporary accommodation. It may have a kitchen or kitchenette, a private bathroom and space for living. Some properties have a separate bedroom, while in others everything takes place in the same studio.

Services vary considerably. A reception, breakfast, cleaning during the stay and changing of bed linen may be included in the price, available for an additional fee or not provided at all. Nor does the word apartment hotel guarantee a full kitchen, laundry facilities or a workspace.

Who is an apartment hotel suitable for?

An apartment hotel is suitable for someone who wants furnished accommodation but needs more everyday functionality than a hotel room provides. What matters is not the name of the trip but what you need to be able to do during the days.

For business trips and project assignments

During a work period lasting several days or weeks, a proper bed, a usable desk, reliable internet, laundry facilities and the opportunity to prepare food are useful. If a colleague or family member is accompanying you, separate sleeping areas may be more important than additional square metres.

A company should also check the invoicing, arrival procedure, contact person, cancellation terms and the availability of extended accommodation. On Mera's corporate accommodation page, you can submit your requirements, dates and practical preferences.

For a move, renovation or other transitional period

In temporary accommodation, everyday life needs to continue as normal. A kitchen, dining area, laundry facilities and storage quickly become important if the accommodation lasts for weeks. Families should check whether the bedrooms are separate and what type of beds provide the stated number of sleeping places.

For a month's accommodation, you can also use the home selection guide.

For leisure visits

An apartment hotel can also work for a holiday of a few nights, especially if you want your own kitchen, more shared space or a particular apartment. If you spend almost all your time in the city and value breakfast, a reception or daily cleaning, a traditional hotel may be a smoother option.

When might an apartment hotel not be the best choice?

An apartment hotel is not automatically more spacious, more affordable or better equipped than a hotel. A compact studio can feel cramped for two people working remotely, and a kitchenette may be too limited for daily cooking. On the other hand, some services considered standard in a hotel may be completely unavailable.

Choose another option if you need, for example, a 24-hour reception, daily cleaning, step-free access or a guaranteed parking space and the property you have chosen does not explicitly promise them. These things must be checked for the specific home you intend to book.

Check these seven things before booking

Thing to check Why does it matter?
Layout and beds A separate bedroom is different from a studio or a sofa bed in a shared space.
Kitchen Check the appliances, dishes, workspace and dining area — a mere kitchenette will not suit every need.
Working arrangements In addition to the table and chair, it matters whether calls can be handled without disturbing others.
Laundry and storage During a stay of several weeks, a washing machine and usable storage make everyday life easier.
Services and items included in the price At minimum, find out about bed linen, towels, final cleaning, internet, electricity and water.
Arrival and assistance Check how you receive the keys or code and whom to contact in case of problems.
Total price and terms Compare the same number of guests and the same dates. Take additional services, cancellations and changes into account.

Do not make your choice based solely on the stated number of guests. Four guests in two bedrooms is a very different arrangement from four sleeping places in one room.

Short or longer accommodation?

For a short stay, ease of arrival, location and up-to-date availability are often the most important factors. During a longer period, attention shifts to everyday life: where you work, how you prepare food, where you store your belongings and how laundry is handled.

At Mera, the booking process is determined by the length of the stay:

The price and services for a longer period are agreed in the quotation. You should not assume that an extension is guaranteed until availability and terms have been confirmed. Read more about longer stays.

Apartment hotel in Turku or Pori

In Turku or Pori, the right location depends on your daily routes. Being close to the city centre may be important during leisure time, but during a work period, the connection to the workplace is often more decisive. For a student, the campus, grocery store and public transport may be essential.

Mera's homes are presented individually so that you can check the photos, layout and key practical details of the apartment you are actually booking. Explore homes in Turku or homes in Pori and compare them with the needs of your daily life.

How to make your choice

An apartment hotel is a good option when you want more homelike surroundings than a hotel without furnishing a conventional rental apartment. However, it is not one standardised product. Always check the actual space, equipment, services, total price and terms.

A good choice is an apartment where the things essential to your everyday life work as they should — without having to guess based on the listing.

Frequently asked questions

Does an apartment hotel always have a kitchen?

Not necessarily. The property may have a full kitchen, a small kitchenette or only limited cooking facilities. Check the appliances, dishes and dining area for each property.

Can you stay in an apartment hotel for several weeks?

Yes, if the property's availability and terms are suitable for a longer stay. Confirm the price for the entire period, services, laundry facilities, storage and any possible extension before booking.

Is an apartment hotel suitable for a business trip?

It can be a good fit if the apartment has a suitable place to work, reliable internet, a good bed and amenities that make everyday life easier. Also check invoicing and the daily connection to the workplace.

Is an apartment hotel the same as Airbnb?

No. Airbnb is a booking channel that may include many types of accommodation. An apartment hotel describes a form of accommodation; the booking channel, services and terms vary.

How does an apartment hotel differ from a furnished rental apartment?

The terms partly overlap. An apartment hotel generally emphasises temporary accommodation, but the actual difference can be found in the booking or rental agreement, services, minimum stay and what is included in the price.
